The industrial implementation of green hydrogen faces challenges, particularly
in managing the intermittency of renewable electricity in the design and
operation of hydrogen plants. Accurate sizing of electrolysers, hydrogen
storage and renewable power plants is critical to optimal plant scheduling.
When making investment decisions, some operational simplifications are often
introduced. These simplifications may include the assumption of constant
efficiency or an infinitely elastic market for hydrogen, neglecting specific
demand considerations and storage management. In this paper we have developed
an investment-operational optimisation model for the design of hydrogen
production plants. In particular, we analyse the effect of different demand
profiles and non-linearities to answer the following questions:
- How does the optimal design of a hydrogen production plant vary when
non-linearities are modelled?
- What are the trade-offs between the size of different plant components?
- How does the optimal design of a hydrogen production plant vary with
different demand profiles?
- Under what conditions (e.g. different demand profiles) can oversimplification
lead to an inadequate result?
