In a context of growing need for flexibility in electric power systems, policy makers and regulators are increasingly valuing load flexibility, also known as demand response, as a key and cost-effective solution. Demand response can meet a variety of interests across the value chain of electricity supply and can contribute to improve overall economic efficiency.
In particular, in distribution networks, the role of DSOs and the usual practices for grid operation an planning could evolve in future years to integrate demand response as a flexibility resource. This thesis explores the feasibility of demand response as a flexibility service for an active distribution network management and analyses its potential economic benefits from a multiple perspective: the consumer, the network and the regulatory environment.
